What is Acid Reflux?

What is Acid Reflux?

Do you have acid reflux? You may have it and not even know it, because millions of people around the world right now are suffering from it but either do not notice it or just assume that the symptoms of the condition are caused by something else. In order to be aware of whether or not you do have acid reflux and need to find an acid reflux cure, here are a few things that will be important for you to know.

What it is

Acid reflux is defined as being a condition in which acid in the stomach flows up and into the upper intestines and the esophagus. Although it can be quite mild, in most cases it is so severe that it is almost debilitating to the person and can even be potentially permanently damaging to the lining of the stomach.

The band muscle tissue called the LES is responsible for closing and opening the lower end of the esophagus, and this is essential for maintaining a barrier against the contents of the stomach, including the stomach acid. Now when the LES is not able to close up completely after food empties into the stomach the acid may be able to escape and make its way up into the intestines and esophagus.

You should not be frightened if you find out that you have acid reflux and instead know that there are lots of different options in terms of treatment and which you can use to deal with your condition. The treatment that will be best for you will depend on a few different factors, including your age, how long you have been suffering from acid reflux, what specific symptoms you are experiencing, and so on.

Make sure that you work as a team with your doctor to get the best results out of this. Acid suppression continues to be the best and longest lasting treatment for acid reflux, and this will involve you taking a medication. The aim here is to reduce the amount of acid that is present in the stomach so that you will not only be helping relieve the acid reflux that you are dealing with now but actually prevent it from coming back in the future.

Now that you know more about acid reflux, you will be able to watch out for the symptoms and get in to see your doctor if you think that you ever may be suffering from this condition and need to do something about it.
