3 Natural Ways of Ridding Asthma

Most people know that because of the nature of asthma, there is really no getting rid of it. Since asthma is a chronic disease, meaning it is recurring and long lasting, there is no cure; not at the moment anyway. Those with the condition know too well what it feels like during an attack; the tightening of the chest, the wheezing, the coughing and the difficulty in breathing, all add up to the trauma and fear that they experience.

While some people carry the burden all their lives, others have found natural treatment and therapies that work along with their regular medication in order to achieve almost total control over their asthma. Some of these alternative treatments and medications prove to be safe and effective; some have side effects, and others react negatively to the prescribed medication and treatments being taken, causing the opposite result.

So far, when it comes to alternative treatments, there are three that have proven themselves to be effective; Pranayama, Buteyko, and Papworth. Papworth and Buteyko have had clinical tests and surveys done in order to prove that the technique really does work and almost all of the individuals who practice Pranayama attest that it works well against asthma.

The Buteyko technique focuses on breathing exercises that enables individuals to control and reduce the frequency of the asthma flares. It has no known side-effects and does not require an ever-increasing medication to control the condition. Buteyko works to reverse the underlying cause of asthma which is chronic hidden hyperventilation.

The Papworth method focuses on breathing and relaxation techniques to make efficient use of the lungs. It emphasizes nose breathing, and develops appropriate breathing patterns for specific activities. While the technique appears beneficial to asthma sufferers, like all complimentary therapy it should be a supplement medical regimen rather than a replacement.

Pranayama, is a sub-type of yoga with more emphasis on achieving well-being through breathing. Consisting of breath suspension and regulation, Pranayama gives sufferers more control in handling their asthma effectively.

It is important that before any action is taken, you should talk to your doctor first in order to gain more knowledge on whether the type of alternative treatment you have chosen will work for your particular condition; as always, the alternative methods should be considered as supplementary and never a replacement for the medication that you are prescribed with.
