Asthma Breathing Treatment - Buteyko Method

Breathing is an essential in life. Breathing is an indication of life and the abscence of it means death. Asthma is a chronic disease wherein a person who suffers from it has difficulty breathing because there is a constriction of airways in the lungs due to inflammation. And since asthma is associated with difficulty in breathing, certain breathing techniques are done to alleviate asthmatic symptoms and reduce the frequency of asthma flare ups.

There is a wide variety of asthma breathing techniques out there and one of the most popular and effective is the Buteyko Breathing Method. It was developed by a Russian doctor - the late Konstantin Pavlovich Buteyko. According to Buteyko, asthma is due to too much carbon dioxide that a person releases, which is the reason why his or her body tries to protect him or her by constricting the air passages to trap in more carbon dioxide. He said that if you are perfectly healthy, you will have 6.5% carbon dioxide in the alveoli of your lungs. This carbon dioxide is critical in keeping a person’s pH at safe level. pH is a chemical measure of how much acid is in our body fluids.

To help prevent the loss of carbon dioxide to a fatally low level, our body tries to protect us by constricting airways and increasing mucus production. This is the reason why wheezing and trouble breathing are symptoms of an asthma attack.

The basic method of Buteyko involves breathing out fully, and then breathing out a little more until you feel as if your abdomen is being drawn back against your spine. Try to stay in this exhaled state for as long as you comfortably can, then try inhaling as gentle as you can without gasping or gulping. After doing that, try breathe normally for a while. When ready, repeat the whole process and attempt to increase the length of time wherein you hold in an exhaled state as comfortably as you can.
