Breast Cancer Treatments

When it comes down to it, there are a number of different kinds of breast cancer that you can be suffering from, each requiring their own different specialised treatments.

Breast cancer treatments are normally broken into two distinct and different areas that are used for fighting the cancer: Systemic Treatments and Local Treatments.

Systemic breast cancer treatments relate to treating the whole of your body (or system, hence the term "systemic") whilst local breast cancer treatments often mean treating just your breast and possibly the lymph nodes adjacent to the affected breast. (Okay, how many of you were guessing that local breast treatment meant it would be carried out in your immediate suburb?)

Now although these two distinct breast cancer treatments seem neatly broken apart it is important to understand that each case of cancer of the breast is unique!

You are unique and your body is unique.

What works as a general treatment for one person may not be the best remedy for the another person! Now that is important - especially as the next person diagnosed with breast cancer might well be you!

For instance, if some of the cancer has spread to other parts of the body outside of the breast area, you might need to have a course of local treatment for those areas on top of a systemic treatment for the breast itself.

How your medical specialist determines the type of treatment that the cancer would respond best to depends on several factors including:

* how far the cancer has spread (if at all)
* your general state of health
* the specifics of the cancer itself
* the results of radiology and pathology tests
* what is discovered during the physical examination

You need to be aware that your breast cancer treatment might well include more than just one type of local or systemic treatment. Indeed, most people suffering from breast cancer find that their breast cancer treatments are prescribed from both types.

Some of your treatment will be given at the same time and some may well be given individually, one at a time.

Because everyone reacts differently to this type of treatment, it is almost impossible for anyone to predict precisely what your treatment course will be over any period of time.

And herein lies the secret for approaching your breast cancer treatment the right way.

Keep in your mind that as you undergo the various cancer treatments, your body will react - sometimes well, other times possibly adversely.

Your medical consultant will be monitoring and judging your progression as you move through the cancer treatment and may adapt and modify your plan, depending on how well it is working for you.

Understand that the treatment of breast cancer is a unique journey and you will be part of the way to managing the stress and worry such this disease can cause. Add that to the knowledge that whatever type of breast cancer you have, as shown by your breast cancer symptoms and medical investigations, no matter what your situation is - there are local and systemic breast cancer treatments available to help you.
